I am currently attending the 1st World Congress on Ultrasound in Medical Education in Columbia, SC. Day 1 was very educational: discussions of how to use point of care ultrasound can be used in areas outside of the hospital was the most interesting:
- EMS use to expedite trauma care by performing the FAST exam en route has been shown to reduce time to the OR.
- Incorporation of ultrasound into medical school curriculum can increase the understanding or both anatomy and physiology in the first 2 years of medical school.
- Ultrasound use in areas where other imaging technologies are either impractical, unaffordable or unavailable such as disaster areas, free rural clinic and even in space (NASA).
